Visible loss-prevention support
Observe agreed areas and report concerns through store procedures. Focus on behaviour and evidence, with respectful treatment of every customer.
Security that fits your store
A visible security presence for your staff, stock and customers. USSG provides SIA-licensed retail security officers, with duties and cover hours agreed around the way your store trades.
Directly employed officers · BS 7858 screening · 24/7 support
On the shop floor
A retail security officer needs to be alert and approachable. The role can include observing entrances and the sales floor, responding to concerns raised by staff and recording incidents for the store manager.
Define the priority areas, how the officer communicates with your team and what happens when an issue needs escalating. The brief should fit your store’s layout, customer flow and loss-prevention procedures.
Retail guarding is part of USSG’s UK security and facilities services. For the wider officer service, explore manned guarding and on-site security.
Observe agreed areas and report concerns through store procedures. Focus on behaviour and evidence, with respectful treatment of every customer.
Provide an approachable point of contact and help manage difficult interactions within the agreed role and escalation plan.
Record the time, location, observed facts, action taken and outstanding issues. Agree how reports are shared and reviewed.
Different stores, different priorities
The right brief for a small shop will differ from one for a shopping centre or a retail warehouse. Discuss the premises, busy periods and areas that need attention.
Plan visible cover around entrances, customer flow, lone-working concerns and the times your team most needs support.
Define shared-area patrols, tenant contacts, public access and the division of responsibilities between landlord and individual stores.
Consider tills, self-checkout areas, stock access and late trading. Agree priorities with the store team rather than assuming one officer can cover everything.
Coordinate customer access with goods-in, staff entrances and designated stock areas. Keep security duties distinct from vehicle-marshalling tasks.
People and accountability
USSG’s direct retail guarding assignments use directly employed, SIA-licensed officers screened to BS 7858 before deployment. Before the first shift, agree site induction, the duties to be performed and the person responsible for day-to-day communication.
USSG holds SIA Approved Contractor status for Security Guarding and Key Holding. This is a company approval with a defined scope; it is separate from each officer’s licence.
Review USSG memberships and accreditation evidence or check USSG on the SIA Approved Contractor register.

A brief for the whole trading day
Confirm the day’s contacts, any unresolved incidents and the agreed access checks. Include stock deliveries or contractors expected before customers arrive.
Set priorities for the entrance, sales floor and staff support. Agree how the officer requests assistance when more than one issue needs attention.
Define any departure support, agreed closing checks and handover requirements. Separate continuing guarding from any alarm response arrangement after the officer leaves.
A calm, proportionate approach
Abuse, threats and aggressive behaviour affect staff as well as the shopping experience. Agree how the officer communicates with managers, de-escalates where appropriate and seeks assistance under the site’s procedures.
Retail guarding should sit within the employer’s wider arrangements for managing violence and aggression. HSE recommends assessing the risks and putting suitable policies and procedures in place.
Read HSE guidance on violence in retail premises.
Guarding supports loss prevention, but no service can guarantee zero theft. Review recurring incidents and adjust the brief alongside your stock controls and store procedures.
Connected support with a clear scope
A combined enquiry can cover the trading day and the hours after closing. Agree the provider, responsibilities and reporting for each service.
Discuss secure key arrangements and attendance following security alarm activation outside the agreed guarding hours.
Explore key holding and alarm response
Coordinate cleaning access and work times with trading hours and security arrangements under a separate agreed brief.

For a closed store or a unit between tenants, discuss inspections and reporting appropriate to the unoccupied premises.

Staffing, hours and store needs
A useful proposal sets out where the officer works, which duties take priority and what happens when your requirements change.
Single stores and retail portfolios
From our Stockport base, USSG considers retail security requirements across the UK. For a portfolio enquiry, share each location and its operating hours so the proposal can distinguish common reporting needs from local duties.
Before you appoint a provider
Practical answers about duties, staffing and arranging cover for your store.
Retail security guards provide an agreed combination of visible guarding, entrance and sales-floor observation, staff support, access checks and incident reporting. Their duties should reflect the store layout, trading hours, risks and the retailer’s procedures.
USSG’s direct retail guarding assignments are delivered by directly employed, SIA-licensed officers screened to BS 7858 before deployment. The store brief, induction and any additional role requirements are agreed before work starts.
No. A visible presence, observation and clear reporting can support loss prevention, but no guarding service can guarantee that theft will not happen. The security plan should work alongside stock controls, store procedures and other suitable measures.
Officers should follow the agreed lawful procedures, their training and the site’s escalation arrangements. The brief should prioritise safety and define when store management, emergency services or other nominated contacts are involved. Customers must be treated respectfully and without discriminatory profiling.
Tell USSG the dates, trading hours, expected activity and site requirements. Short-term or additional cover can be discussed, with staffing, scope and availability confirmed before booking. There is no guaranteed deployment time.
An officer cannot remain at a fixed entrance while patrolling another area. Store size, access points, busy periods and simultaneous duties need to be considered when deciding staffing and priorities.
Yes, requirements can be discussed together with separate responsibilities agreed for each service. Key holding and alarm response can support security alarm activations. CCTV installation or specialist monitoring requirements are arranged through specialist suppliers and are not automatically included in guarding.
Costs depend on the number of officers, cover hours, store layout, duties, assignment duration and any additional services. A written proposal should state the scope, charges and process for changing the cover.
USSG considers single-store and multi-site enquiries across the UK. Share each postcode and its requirements so staffing, availability, reporting and local arrangements can be assessed. A listed area does not guarantee immediate cover.
Send the store postcode, business type, opening hours, required coverage and proposed start date. Include the main concerns, access arrangements and any retailer-specific onboarding requirements. USSG will review the brief and agree the next assessment step.
