A HANDLER AND DOG, WORKING TO AN AGREED BRIEF

What should K9 security add to your site?

A dog-handler team can provide a visible security presence and carry out planned patrols in agreed areas. The service needs to fit the premises, the people using them and the conditions in which the team will work.

Start with the actual concern: an exposed boundary, periods when a site is empty, or a requirement for a specialist patrol presence. A dog team is one option to assess alongside fencing, access arrangements and other security measures.

SUITABILITY FIRST

Where will the team work—and who else uses that space?

The route, boundaries and access arrangements matter as much as the requested shift times.

Describe the patrol requirement.

  • Boundaries, yards and buildings to include
  • Known entry points and areas of concern
  • Times when workers or vehicles are present
  • Existing guards, alarms and access procedures

Identify constraints early.

  • Public footpaths, shared entrances and neighbours
  • Visitors, vulnerable people and other animals
  • Unsafe surfaces, machinery and changing site layouts
  • Weather exposure, rest arrangements and welfare needs

If a dog team is unsuitable for the environment, discuss manned guarding services or another approach suited to the risks.

SITE APPLICATIONS

Plan around the premises.

Construction sites

Discuss the boundary, materials storage and out-of-hours activity. Patrol areas need reviewing as the layout, workforce and vehicle movements change.

Vacant properties

Start with the building condition, access points and frequency of visits. Decide whether the requirement is a dog-handler presence, conventional guarding or property inspections.

Warehouses & industrial yards

Consider delivery traffic, pedestrian routes and staff shift changes. Agree where a specialist team can work without disrupting normal site activity.

FROM ENQUIRY TO ASSIGNMENT

Confirm the team, the route and the responsibilities.

A clear assignment plan tells the supplier what is required and gives your site team a practical point of reference.

Agree site details before confirming specialist cover.
  1. Share the brief

Send the postcode, site type, dates, shift hours and security concerns. Tell us about public access, shared spaces and existing measures.

  2. Review site suitability

Arrange supplier assessment where appropriate. Review patrol routes, hazards, handler control, welfare and practical access arrangements.

  3. Confirm the proposal

Identify supplier responsibilities, relevant handler and team credentials, insurance, charges and the agreed scope before booking.

  4. Prepare for the start

Confirm induction, assignment instructions, reporting and escalation contacts. Agree the start date once staffing and site readiness are confirmed.

EVIDENCE AND PRACTICAL CONTROL

What should you check before a dog team starts?

Handler & team credentials

  • Required SIA licence for the duties
  • Relevant dog-handling qualification and competence
  • Current evidence for the handler-and-dog pairing
  • Insurance appropriate to the proposed assignment

NASDU’s general-purpose dog-handler qualification guidance distinguishes handler qualifications from team certification. Refer to the supplier’s actual evidence; this link is not a claim of USSG membership.

Control, welfare & reporting

  • Defined patrol boundaries and public-access arrangements
  • Handler control, signage and site procedures
  • Suitable welfare, rest and transport arrangements
  • Incident records and named escalation contacts

Check the SIA’s licensing guidance and the requirements applicable to the assignment. The supplier’s site plan should address how the team will operate safely.

K9 SECURITY QUESTIONS

Before you book a dog-handler team.

Answers about delivery, suitability, credentials and planning your cover.

What is K9 security?

K9 security pairs a specialist handler with a security dog for agreed site duties, such as a visible presence and planned patrols. The team, working areas, hours and reporting arrangements must be suitable for the site. It is not the same as leaving a dog to guard premises alone.

Does USSG provide its own security dog teams?

USSG arranges K9 security through trusted specialist suppliers. The proposal identifies the delivery arrangements and required credentials before booking. This page does not claim that USSG owns or directly employs the dog teams.

Which credentials should I check for a dog-handler team?

Ask for evidence relevant to the assignment, including the handler’s required SIA licence, dog-handling competence, current handler-and-dog team assessment, insurance and site instructions. Check the scope and validity of the evidence; a training organisation’s name alone is not enough.

Can you arrange overnight or temporary K9 cover?

You can enquire about overnight shifts, temporary cover or a longer-term requirement. The specialist supplier confirms availability, suitable staffing, welfare arrangements and the start date after reviewing the brief. USSG provides 24/7 support; this is not a promise of immediate deployment.

Are security dogs suitable for sites open to the public?

Suitability needs assessment. Public access, shared routes, visitors, vulnerable people and other animals can affect whether and where a dog team can work. Agree separation and control arrangements before booking; another security approach may be more appropriate.

Does K9 guarding include drug or explosives detection?

No. General-purpose security dog work and specialist detection are different requirements. This page covers general-purpose K9 security enquiries. Do not assume drugs, explosives or other detection work is included.

How much does a security dog-handler service cost?

The quotation depends on location, duties, hours, duration, team requirements and the practical conditions at the site. Request a written proposal that explains the included cover and any additional charges. There is no single rate quoted on this page.

Can K9 security work alongside other services?

Where appropriate, a specialist dog team can form part of a wider site plan with manned guarding, key holding or separately arranged CCTV. Duties, areas and escalation responsibilities need to be agreed so that the services work together.

What information should I send with my enquiry?

Share your site postcode, property type, proposed dates and hours, areas of concern, and details of public access or other animals. Include any site plans or existing security arrangements. USSG can then discuss the requirement and arrange specialist supplier input.
