Security with a defined purpose

Choose cover for the way your premises operate

A guard at a staffed reception has a different role from an officer covering a closed warehouse. Start with the duties you need performed, then agree the hours, access permissions and reporting arrangements.

Manned guarding

For premises that need an officer present during agreed hours. Discuss visitor checks, reception cover, patrols and how incidents should be recorded and escalated.

Key holding & alarm response

For an agreed response arrangement when an alarm activates. Establish who can authorise entry, where keys provide access and who should be contacted after attendance.

Site & warehouse guarding

For sites where deliveries, vehicle movements and restricted areas need clear controls. Set out gate duties, patrol boundaries and checks around shift changes.

A clearer brief, a more useful quote

Plan for occupied hours, closed periods and handovers

For Birmingham city-centre premises or a unit in the Jewellery Quarter, explain how the building is used rather than relying on its address alone. Where a property has shared entrances or multiple occupiers, identify who can authorise entry and which areas are included.

Questions to answer before requesting cover
SituationWhat to defineWhy it matters
Shared offices or commercial unitsTenant contacts, reception hours, permitted visitors and shared access points. The officer needs clear authority to admit people without disrupting other occupiers.
Retail opening and closingTrading times, staff arrival, delivery access and responsibility for locking up.Cover should reflect when people and goods move through the premises.
Warehouse shift changesVehicle checks, gate opening, staff entry and visitor sign-in.Define which checks continue when arrivals and departures overlap.
Construction or refurbishmentCurrent boundaries, contractor permissions and changes to access routes.Assignment instructions need to reflect the working site as it changes.
Empty premises or closed periodsAlarm contacts, authorised access, agreed checks and escalation instructions.Make clear what happens when no building representative is on site.

Choose a continuous presence or a response arrangement

Manned guarding places an officer on site for the agreed shift. Key holding and alarm response provides an agreed arrangement for alarm activations; it is not continuous on-site cover. A site can need both, with separate duties and charges clearly documented.

Birmingham service enquiries

Tell us exactly where cover is needed

Enquire about a city-centre building, premises in the Jewellery Quarter or another Birmingham address. Include the full postcode and the entrance the security team would use, particularly if visitor access and service access are on different sides of the property.

  • Birmingham city centre
  • Jewellery Quarter
  • Other Birmingham postcodes

For a West Midlands site outside Birmingham, include the town as well as the postcode. The team will confirm availability for that location and the requested hours.

USSG’s head office is in Stockport, Greater Manchester. The map shows the Birmingham area, not a USSG office or a guaranteed response boundary.

A practical mobilisation process

From your site brief to a prepared security team

Whether this is a new requirement or a change of provider, the start date needs to be supported by the right staffing, instructions and access arrangements.

  1. Step 01

    Describe the assignment

Share the Birmingham address, working hours, start date and duties. Tell us whether you are adding cover or replacing an existing provider.

  2. Step 02

    Review access & risks

Discuss entry points, alarms, shared areas and site contacts. A site assessment is arranged where appropriate.

  3. Step 03

    Agree the service

Confirm duties, officer numbers, charges, reporting and the proposed start date. Identify what is included and what needs separate agreement.

  4. Step 04

    Prepare the handover

Agree key or access arrangements, assignment instructions and escalation contacts before the service begins, with 24/7 support.

What should your Birmingham security quote cover?

A useful quote explains the assignment, not just an hourly figure. Officer numbers, shift patterns, site duties and contract duration affect the cost. Key holding and alarm response have their own arrangements and applicable charges.

Ask whether the specification includes reporting, additional attendance and any duties outside the agreed hours. Confirm the proposed start date before relying on the cover.

Can I request overnight or weekend cover?

Yes, you can request overnight, weekend or other specified shifts. Send the dates, start and finish times, site address and duties required. Staffing and the start date remain subject to confirmation; 24/7 support does not mean immediate deployment is guaranteed.
